A dental implant is a small screw made of titanium which is placed into the bone to provide a stable platform for the replacement of a missing tooth. Titanium dental implants have been used for over forty years. Implants can replace one or more teeth or hold dentures securely in the mouth. There has been a large amount of research to show that implants work extremely effectively and reliably, and are the best possible replacement for missing teeth with success rates of over 96%.
The main component is the titanium implant itself. This looks like a small screw with a roughened surface. The implant is about the same size as the root of a natural tooth. The implant is placed into the bone and left for 4-6 weeks. After this time it is solid in the bone.

Once the implant is solid in the bone, the second part, a special titanium post, can be screwed into the implant. This is called the abutment. The abutment is used to hold a crown or bridge to the implant.
