How much do dental crowns cost?

A single dental crown typically costs $1,000–$2,500 in 2026, with porcelain-fused-to-metal and all-ceramic at the higher end and full-metal slightly lower. Same-day CAD/CAM crowns run similar to lab crowns. Insurance typically covers 50% of medically necessary crowns after deductible.

What does getting a crown involve?

Traditional crowns take two visits: the tooth is shaped, an impression taken, and a temporary placed; the permanent crown is cemented 2–3 weeks later. Same-day CAD/CAM crowns are scanned, milled in-office in 60–90 minutes, and cemented in a single visit. Local anesthesia is used.

Does getting a crown hurt?

Crown prep is painless under local anesthesia. Mild sensitivity to hot, cold, and pressure for 2–4 weeks is normal; persistent pain may indicate the need for a root canal. There is no downtime — patients eat normally the same day, avoiding sticky foods with a temporary.

How long do dental crowns last?

Crowns typically last 10–15 years, with all-ceramic and zirconia crowns often lasting 15–20+ years. Recurrent decay at the margin is the most common failure cause, so flossing under the crown is essential. Grinders should wear a nightguard to protect the porcelain.

Do I need a crown or could a filling work?

A crown is needed when a tooth has a large filling covering more than half the surface, after root canal treatment, or when a tooth is cracked. If less than 50% of the tooth structure is missing, a large filling or onlay ($600–$1,500) is often a conservative alternative.
